Wrong Direction: New Music by Hailee Steinfeld

Have you heard of this new music, “Wrong Direction” by Hailee Steinfeld? If you haven’t, I think you should listen to it. Click this link right here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncV1TlNl9B8. You don’t have to be a musical genius to understand what it means because the lyrics are so direct and powerful. It doesn’t need much analyzing to understand that she’s been hurt and been through hell. Here’s the lyrics. Maybe you want to dive in to the depths of this song with me.

I don’t hate you
No, I couldn’t if I wanted to
I just hate all the hurt that you put me through
And that I blame myself for letting you
Did you know I already knew?

Couldn’t even see you through the smoke
Lookin’ back, I probably should have known
But I just wanted to believe that you were out sleepin’ alone

Loved me with your worst intentions
Didn’t even stop to question
Every time you burned me down
Don’t know how; for a moment it felt like heaven
Loved me with your worst intentions
Painted us a happy ending
Every time you burned me down
Don’t know how; for a moment it felt like heaven

And it’s so gut-wrenchin’
Fallin’ in the wrong direction

On my tip-toes
But I still couldn’t reach your ego
Guess I was crazy to give you my body, my mind
Don’t know what I was thinkin’ ’til now
Everyone thinks that you’re somebody else
You even convinced yourself

And it’s so gut-wrenchin’ (Ooh, ooh)
Fallin’ in the wrong direction (Ooh, ooh)
How did you sweep me right off my feet?
Baby, I can’t keep
Fallin’ in the wrong direction
How did you sweep me right off my feet?
Right off my feet

What do you think of the lyrics?

I know there are words that struck you right through your gut. We all have our fair share of hurt when we loved the wrong people and so we can relate to this song. If you haven’t been this hurt, well, you are so damn lucky. Anyway, I do believe that sad songs make the best music. The amount of vulnerability makes it raw and relatable. When our pain is being written and translated into lyrics of a song adding all the right instruments to it, right then and there, our soul would resonate to it. And you start to feel all the emotions that you have been trying to avoid.

Many would say this song is about Niall Horan, Hailee’s ex-boyfriend and others would say the title of the song is in reference to Niall’s former band “One Direction.” However, since there is no confirmation nor denial of the said rumors, all there is are speculations.

Hailee Steinfeld

I think Hailee’s one of those underrated artists. She’s talented and some of her songs are really good. This one in particular’s got Selena’s Lose You to Love Me vibe. The music video’s simple and there are no effects and complicated artistry involved BUT you can feel the raw emotions attached to it. It kills me to know that a beautiful woman like her has to question herself, her worth as a woman and the only thing that she did was love the wrong person —- like what her lyrics say, fall in the wrong direction.

I just hate all the hurt that you put me through
And that I blame myself for letting you

These lyrics specifically just hit home. When you realize that the person you love turned out to be someone you’re not expecting, then you blame yourself because you know that you’re the one who allowed that person to be in your life. You let that person in and you thought that he/she is worth it but he/she’s toxic and damaging. Now, you have to go through all that unnecessary pain. It’s sad really. No one deserves that but it’s life so you hang on and glue back together all the broken pieces of your heart and soul.
